 Actor, Writer, Stand-Up Comedian & Producer

 

Davyd hales from San Diego, CA. He was bitten by the acting bug as a child and started his acting career in Jr. High, doing various plays, scenes and monologues under the direction of Mrs. O’Connell, a very energetic teacher, full of praise for his work. Later going to Patrick Henry High alongside Annette Benning he did plays throughout. Two favorites were OF MICE & MEN and the ODD COUPLE as well as GODSPELL. In between these he did various scenes under the direction of Ann Archer Krill. Then moving on to the famous San Diego OLD GLOBE & CASSUS CARTER Theaters, acting in SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY, OTHELLO and MACBETH under Craig Noel and Ann Archer Krill. . He also worked with various community theater groups in San Diego. The San Diego Black Repertory Theater being in A RASIN in the SUN and TRIALS and TRIBULATIONS of STAGGERLEE BOOKER T. BROWN, under Dr. Floyd Gaffney of UCSD. Also the Tierrasanta Community Theater group (Theater on the Hill) productions of MY SISTER EILEEN, ARSNIC & OLD LACE and GOODBYE CHARLIE.

His other acting training in San Diego came by way of D.J. Sullivan and Marvin Gerrish. In addition to his acting he expanded his talent modeling in San Diego and Mexico also Los Angeles. He became very involved in the art of dance encompassing Jazz, Ballet and Funk. Dancing with the SDSU Black Repertory Total Theatrical Experience under the direction of the Late Danny Scarborough as well as different dance companies, dancing around San Diego and Los Angeles with Dance Connection, Electric Force, Peninsula Dance Arts and Rock Fantasy. Davyd traveled to and from San Diego to Los Angeles and began dancing on Soul Showcase locally based dance show in San Diego to nationally syndicated American Bandstand and Soul Train as a regular for four years.

But before moving to Los Angeles he ventured to the Big Apple New York, performing at the Village Theatre in THE GENTLEMEN of VERONA and NICOLAS NICKLEBY to feel the difference of both coast.

He then moved to LA in mid 1985, got situated and began setting sights on how to get going, working with John Angelo, LA Community Theater and well known actress Virginia Capers with the Layfette Players West as well as Sheree Brown doing various productions around LA. He also got involved with different workshops, two in particular, The Weatherford Group and Tepper Gallegos.  Davyd received a few breaks on TV and Films, What’s Happenin’ Now, Amen and Who’s the Boss, FAME. The film How I Got Into College, Blood (which is still in the can), though not the same one Wesley Snipes starred in which he worked on too.  As of the past few years he has been seriously educating himself on the production side to expand himself and knowledge by training with Tanya Kersey and is happy he did.

During the early 90’s due to a close friend’s illness with HIV, he took some time off to take care of him in his time of need through his passing. The result with his experience was the founding of a minority based HIV/AIDS organization located in the San Fernando Valley called HANDS UNITED TOGETHER (HUT) copywriting and coining the slogan, “The Color Line Doesn’t Stop At The Hollywood Sign”, this because so often monies for people of color went to South LA overlooking the San Fernando valley, without much needed funding. Realizing the need for such an organization in San Fernando Valley helping those with HIV/AIDS providing support groups, helping the homeless HIV/AIDS individuals and families find housing. HUT also provides Outreach Education/Prevention to reduce HIV infection among minorities.

To his surprise his hard work didn’t go unnoticed because one day President Clinton’s secretary Shalala called because they wanted Davyd to work on a special subcommittee focusing on African Americans on a national level with regard to funding but also the CDC, Center for Disease Control requested him to assist in reviewing grants for national funding and locally Los Angeles Mayor Hahn’s office called requesting his expertise to be on a committee with regard to condom distribution. But to add Jackson State University was also doing a national study within the same target population, which Davyd was named the Western Regional Head person. All of these were to help in the reduction of HIV/AIDS within our communities of color.

In the course of all of this he began a show on Public Access called California View. The show focused on individuals in the entertainment industry and humanistic issues, ending the shows with a positive note; we hear too many negatives on the news. He performed in feature films such as Coming to America; he’s the second person you see in the film. Amistad and Why Do Fools Fall In Love. He has worked with the likes of Debbie Allen, Goldie Hawn, Gary Marshall, Kevin Hooks, Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Tishina Arnold, Wesley Snipes, Tony Award winner Virginia Capers, Vivica A. Fox, Roz Ryan as well as Bette Midler, Richard Pryor and Redd Fox just to name a few.

In between all of this he has written a theater production called LALA Bye Anthology, which is based on the book by the same name giving different individuals experiences and feelings dealing with HIV/AIDS, which was his directorial debut at Hollywood’s Richard Pryor Theater and Coleman/Smith Theater. Davyd is a well-rounded person possessing an Associate degree in Psychology a Bachelors degree in Business Administration and a Masters degree in Human Behavior. He was also the Health Chair for the San Fernando Valley NAACP assisting in waking up the valley to People of Color health issues. He also held the position of SPA 2 Service Provider for the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV. Davyd is also the brain child and co-producer of a PSA regarding HIV/AIDS and communities of color primarily targeting African Americans and Latinos called “Are We Ascending Before Our Time”. It is felt his expertise within the subject matter as he too has dealt within medical and entertainment, which has been vital to NOHO the series. NOHO a new show to be coming soon, he also appears in This Indie Thing, Pain In The Gums, and Donut Holes and recently was very good in the role of Black Witch in the new film Shadow of the Monarch. Also has begun doing Stand-up Comedy at various small venues around the LA area such as The Comedy Store, Comedy Lounge or even the Kodak performing at The Inside Comedy Lounge as well as doing a one man show titled “I Didn’t Do It, It Wasn’t Me”. You might have caught him on Thursday nights, Cleo King's Open Mic usually at the Two Roads theater performing comedy, spoken word or pieces from his book LALA Bye Anthology, which has 3 editions as well as the latest book titled HOW LOW CAN U GO…SHALLOOOww.  He is presently in the process of using a piece from his 1st book being shot this year 2016 called All Alone and stands to be a very good film.  He is coming out in other new film projects as well. So keep your eyes on the lookout for Davyd McCoy.

All this while being primarily a single parent raising a son and nephew to upstanding adults. So definitely keep your eyes open Davyd McCoy is coming your way.
